Smorstad's Scoop- January 28th

**WEEKLY SCOOP!**

We are continuing to do economics and finally starting money in math. It is difficult to get through new subject matter when we have had so many snow days! We are still working hard to keep up the progress on our timed addition tests. Many students are on the addition 8’s and 9’s… keep practicing flash cards at home since it is easy to get stuck as the problems get harder!

**WEEKLY SCOOP!**

I can’t believe this winter weather! Hopefully it will be come to a close soon. We are going to have a short week with another half-day interruption. We are starting to review and study money in math than goes perfectly with our economics unit. Rewarding your child with your loose change… if they can count it… is a great way to practice counting money!

Smorstad's Scoop- January 14th

**WEEKLY SCOOP!**

Maybe we will have a normal week of school in February!! The SMARTIES did a great job jumping right into the swing of things after the snow day break mid-week. We are starting a social studies unit on economics. They are going to learn about everything from needs and wants to supply and demand. I love getting to teach something outside of reading and writing because they are always so eager to learn!

Dylan was a great star student!

* We will continue to study time next week and have an assessment next Friday. They are being tested on time to hour, half hour, and quarter hour. Please practice with your child at home.

* Our next math unit will be over money. This will be a time to review and reteach what we learned in first grade and expand on counting mixed coins. Now is the time to get out those piggy banks and practice counting money again!

* If you have not scheduled a conference with me please do so ASAP. Thanks!

**WEEKLY SCOOP!**

We had a good first week of the NEW YEAR! Due to all of the snow days progress reports will be sent home next Friday. I apologize for the wait. I appreciate how fast many of you have returned the conference form. I am excited to get our meetings started. If you have not returned the form, please do so as soon as possible so we can get a time scheduled. Thank you for donating materials and time to make our party a success!

Sydney G. was a great star student!

* We began reviewing time to the hour and half hour (from first grade) and added time to the quarter hour. Have your child show you what they know using a clock in your house!

* We are still in need of candy and gum donations for our Bonus Buck prizes!

* For the second half of the year the homework packet will include the usual reading log and spelling practice but it will now have a comprehension practice page. In order to reach end of grade level reading goals, students must be able to write about what they are reading. This is great practice!
